Who Are The Poor?
In the Gospels, the Poor include:
- people with few material resources
- the powerless
- refugees
- social outcasts
- etc.
The following biblical texts will be helpful to our understanding:
- Matthew 5:1-12 “Blessed are the poor in spirit . . .”
- Matthew 11:1-6 – ” . . . the good news is proclaimed to the poor . . .”
- Matthew 19:16-30 – “. . . sell your possessions and give to the poor . . .”
- Matthew 25:31-46 – The Sheep and the Goats
- Luke 4:14-21 – “The Spirit of the Lord is on me because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor . . .”
- Luke 14:12-14 – ” . . . invite the poor . . .”
- Luke 14:15-24 – ” . . . bring in the poor . . .”
