Asking Good Questions

Are you curious about people? Are you a good listener?

One of the easiest ways to start a spiritual conversation with someone is to ask good questions and to listen carefully to what the person says. A good question gives someone a chance to reveal something about themselves. You may also recall that, in the Five Thresholds approach to relational evangelism, the video for  Threshold 2: Curiosity encourages us to develop a set of questions we enjoy asking people.

Basic Questions:

    • What excites you? What inspires your passion?
    • What breaks your heart?

Questions adapted from Rick Warren's "The Purpose Driven Church" - repeated in various articles (e.g. Christian Post: "Understanding Unbelievers"):

Initial Questions

      • What do you think is the greatest need in this area?
      • Are you actively attending any church?

Followup Questions for those not actively attending any church:

      • Why do you think most people don't attend church?
      • If you were to look for a church to attend, what kind of things would you look for?
      • What could I do for you?  What advice can you give to a Christian who really wants to be helpful to people?

Questions from Threshold 2: Curiosity:

    • Do you have any faith background?
      • What does that mean for you today?
    • Have you ever been to church?
      • What's your experience with Christians been like?
    • Every thinking person owes it to themselves to form an adult opinion about Jesus.
      • Have you had that chance?

Other Questions

    • What do you do (i.e. job, career, etc.)?
      • How did you decide to go into that line of work? What do you like/dislike about it?
    • Where are you from?
      • Do you want to stay here? What do you like about being here?
      • Is there anywhere else you would like to live? Why?

Checkout the following:

Topics to explore in discussion:

    • What questions can you think of that might open your relationship with a new person?
    • What questions can you think of that might help start a spiritual conversation with someone?
