Lesson 1: Jesus Sends Out the Twelve

Main text and related passages:

Checkout the following:

Topics to explore:

    • Notice that the apostles are being sent our a little over a third of the way through the gospel (this is true for Matthew, Mark, and Luke). Why does Jesus send them out when his ministry to them is only 1/3 complete?
    • How does  Daniel 7 inform your understanding of what Jesus means when he refers to himself as the “Son of Man”?
    • In light of Daniel 7, when does Jesus mean when he says “you will not finish going through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes”?
    • Review Christianity, Following Jesus, and our current process/activity
    • Jesus’ process: Follow me, baptism, access to your network. – Peter, Matthew

Training assignment (do this yourself, and use it to help train someone else):

    • Read the main passage and related passages above.

Proclaiming Good News:

Now that we’ve reached the point in the Gospel of Matthew at which Jesus sends his 12 apostles out to proclaim the good news, it’s time to begin exploring our own evangelism. Remember that you can only disciple someone who has already made a commitment to following Jesus. In order to have someone to disciple, you or someone else must first win them to Christ.

Evangelism —-> Conversion —-> Discipleship

Our evangelism curriculum is designed to help you and the members of your life group develop your ability to do this:

Following Jesus: Good News!

You can pursue this Good News material in a variety of ways:

  • Use it directly to train a disciple.
  • Use it to train your entire life group (including someone you are discipling) in evangelism. Talk to your life group leaders to plan this.
  • Participate in one of our  Good News classes that we will offer from time to time.
